Salzburg Girls' Trip 2014

Getting from Munich to Salzburg was quite easy.  For about 20 USD pp we bought the partner tickets (again!) .  It was a 2 hour train ride. We enjoyed resting our feet after all the walking we had done in Munich. Of course wine and snacks were a necessity on the train.

We had a great time in Munich despite the weather- but now it is on to Salzburg- home of Mozart and the Sound of Music. We only had 2 nights here which was not enough- I recommend 3 nights.

Here is Mozart in the city's main square.
Every year Salzburg purchases a new piece of art for the city. The sculpture below is also Mozart- but it is hidden in a back alley- The residents of Salzburg hate it!
Below is another example of the outdoor art.- Kinda cool? It is a statue on top, BTW.

We loved strolling through St. Peter's Cemetery (free).
It contained some of the best memorials I have ever seen.

Mirabell Gardens (free) behind the Mirabell Palace (can't go in)  was a great place for drinking wine and having a little picnic in one of the side gardens. You can see the Salzburg Castle in the background.  We didn't have enough time to take the funicular to the top.

We stayed in a small hotel on the outskirts of town.
It was about a mile walk to the town central, but only 2 blocks from the train station. I think I would try to stay closer to the city central next time, but this place was cheap (44USDpp) and included a good breakfast. The rooms were a bit eclectic- but serviceable.  We stayed in 2 quads which were smaller than I thought they would be.

We went out for a wonderful dinner one of our nights

It was a Mozart themed dinner, a bit pricey (about 90USD pp with wine), a bit touristy, but now we can claim we have eaten in the oldest continuously operated restaurant in Europe! (803 AD).Charlemagne ate here...kind of like George Washington slept here...lol

We shopped on Getreidegasse Street- coolest metal shop signs!

But I must admit that the best thing we did there was the Fraulein Maria bike tour which left from Mirabelle Garden.
This was the BEST 31USD I have ever spent.
Look at our faces in these pics- we couldn't stop smiling (except the 1 uphill part)
We stopped at all the Sound of Music places, our guide was excellent explaining the movie part, but also at explaining the real use for the building. mini history lesson.

Yeah, we even danced in the meadows.

I LOVED Salzburg. One more day would have been perfect.

Next stop Hallstatt.
