Hallstatt Girls Trip 2014

We had to be flexible in our journey from Salzburg to Hallstatt.  The rail tracks were being repaired right outside of Hallstatt, so we took the train as far as we could and then boarded a bus that drove us right into Hallstatt.
This town was voted into the top ten of most beautiful places in the world...and I agree.
We spent 3 days here.  We thought that this would be our town for relaxation, but we were wrong- we were so busy here as well. We would have needed a full 4th day to relax and really explore.

We stayed at Gasthof Simony (red) which is located right on the town square.
rooms were about $70 a night pp and included breakfast- good breakfast.
We also ate lunch here one day and it was tasty as well!

The rooms were quaint and comfortable

But the view from the balcony was outstanding- to say the least- be sure to request a lakeside room, and this will be your view!

Wandering through town you can see the place has incredible places to eat Lake Trout!
This restaurant pictured below had good food but our favorite was Gastof Seewirt Zauner
Zauner was right next to our hotel.  Best fish I have ever had!

and it has a beautiful cemetery

 with a bone house

We took the funicular up to the Salt Mines-( and then hiked and hiked) this was the view- we had an amazing antipasto  plate at the restaurant at the top of the funicular.

This was the cool overhang by the salt mines
We thought that the salt mines would be "hokey", but it turned out to be so much fun!
They give you these clothes to wear so when you slide- yes I said slide, from one level to the next in the mine you don't ruin your clothes. Then you end the tour on this tram which brings you up from the bottom of the mine.  Buy your salt gifts at the mine gift shop- they are cheaper than in town!

The next day we took the local bus over to Dauchstein to visit the Ice Caves and Five Fingers overlook.  This trip would be bad for people with altitude sickness.  The cost of this was about $40USD pp.  This included the Ice Cave and the gondola ride to all the levels of the mountain.
the link above is excellent
                                                         again- you gotta love German
The hike up to the Ice Caves was very long and steep.  We all had to stop frequently to catch our breaths. The ice cave tour was very good. We saw many cool ice formations. The tour lasted about 40 minutes.  It was about 35 degrees inside the cave- so dress warmly -bring your gloves.

After this tour, the gondola took us further upward to Five Fingers overlook.
But you had to hike another great distance to get there.
But once you were there, you were rewarded with THIS scenery!

But what was extra fun were the "activities" at each of the fingers.

We had a grand time playing on the platforms!
We must have walked 10 miles today- all uphill- okay- some downhill too!
We all slept like babies that night!

In conclusion, may I also recommend that you rent an electric boat and see the town by water.
This IS a town I would love to re-visit.

The next morning we were picked up by a private shuttle van that would take us to Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic.
